What Is Fascial Stretch Therapy?
Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is a form of assisted stretching that targets fascial connective tissue and joint capsules to increase range of motion and stability, improve performance, and reduce pain. In addition, it’s a pain-free method that is great for injury prevention and rehabilitation!
FST has no age restrictions and has benefit for all fitness levels. FST Practitioners focus on the body as a whole connected unit by stretching entire fascial nets as opposed to just one individual muscle. This helps to optimize results and improve your overall performance in your everyday life.
The emphasis of our FST Practitioner in Saskatoon is on long term sustainability. To do this, we include an educational component to your FST sessions. This involves teaching you movement based stretches, corrective exercise, joint stability, workplace ergonomics, breathing patterns, and proper muscle activation. As a result, you will learn to maintain the results achieved in your session.
Fascial Stretch Therapy is a great addition to your current wellness program! Combining therapies such as massage, chiropractic, and physiotherapy with FST supports your overall wellness and speeds up the process of getting the results you crave.
STRETCHING FASCIA VS. MUSCLE
Fascia surrounds each muscle, and connects them to each other both superficially and deep. It also connects tendons, ligaments, and bone to form a body-wide, functional network. Fascia connects to all of your organs and systems, too. By integrating a global perspective on stretching these fascial connections, we can reap twice the benefits as static stretching isolated muscle groups.
FST is completely different than yoga, and Pilates. It is completely compatible with other methods of therapy and training.
Effects of Untreated Fascia
- decreased joint space can lead to degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis and more
- increased muscle tone can lead to trigger points, strain, tendonitis, tears & more
- increased nervous tissue tone can lead to headaches, trigger points, muscle tightness & more
- increased scar tissue formation
- decreased blood flow, decreased energy, increased fatigue & more
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A TYPICAL FST SESSION?
Upon your first treatment, your fascial stretch therapist will ask specific questions, and assess the body based on any complaints, or questions you may have. Each session is catered to the client’s needs. All treatments are done on the table with two straps. The straps are there to hold the one leg in place, while the opposing one gets moved around. This assures a true stretch is occurring. For each stretch session, the client is expected to wear athletic clothing, stretchy pants or shorts, and a tank top or t-shirt. NO JEANS!
Benefits of Fascial Stretch Therapy:
- Improves physical and emotional well-being
- Improves flexibility and mobility
- Improves weight loss
- Improves body alignment and posture
- Improves energy
- Restoration of normal joint space is anti-aging at its best – youthful movement without pain!
- Will make all the difference in sports performance
- Reduces injuries so you can get on with your goals in fitness, recreation & sports
How Often Should I Get Stretched?
You'll see improvement in your flexibility and posture with just 1 session, but clients who get stretched regularly see larger and longer lasting gains. For a Flexibility Makeover, I recommend you get stretched once a week for 4-6 weeks and then taper back to assess improvement to create a “maintenance plan”, for future visits.
