. The mind at ease frees the body from dis-ease I've been practicing massage therapy for 20 years. But it wasn't until 2014 that I began to recognize a connection between how the body functions and how the mind operates it. I noticed a resistance to flow between what clients' stated intentions are and my manual manipulation techniques. For instance when working on tightly bound calves, I began to notice my own movement lacked flowed. Just like when throwing a ball, the wrist is to completely follow through with the motion in order to keep the trajectory of the aim, so it is with manual therapists working with their hands, but more importantly their stance. The stance isn't just about supporting the therapist, it also allows proper flow of arms and hands. This wasn't something taught to me. My own intuition began to teach me about flow state. Something that 'learning' to play clarinet, volleyball, t-ball, cheer, tap, ballet, jazz, and public speaking seemed to have failed to prepare me for. Four years later, in 2018, I began to notice a major disconnect between my flow state and the expectations of the clients. Many claim they just want to relax. But when the opportunity arises to lay on a warm, inviting massage table, they seem to believe they are alone in their thoughts. I'm here to assure you this is not truth. How you think and what you think about is so intimately intwined with how the body functions, we simply cannot ignore it any longer. It's 2023 and we are on the forefront of neuroscience. Science is beginning to comprehend ancient models of self-care like meditation and yoga. Soon enough the importance of touch and the harms caused by its lack of attention and the lack of ordered thought as the remote control of the body will be evaluated.
