How did you get into Massage?
My heart led me when my mind had no idea I needed to change. It’s funny how things find you when you aren’t looking. I always had a career path set in front of me, yet curveballs being what they are, kept blind siding me but I would persevere. Climbing over obstacles or knocking them out of my way without really looking at them so I could be a strong, independent, successful career woman. I never gave much thought to how much stress I was under being a young mom, going to college, working and always striving for the American Dream which equated to MORE or in reality NEVER enough. That was until the day stress caught up with me in a doctor’s appointment for my 5 month prenatal checkup. No heartbeat. I was devastated. I turned to massage as a refuge to forgive my body or just mentally release. I’m not sure which. But what I do know is that was the day my entire life changed. As I was in the massage I had an epiphany about stress and what it is capable of. It’s a killer and it eats away at you before you even know what is happening. Stress was not going to help me become strong, independent or successful, it was going to break me down. I took this to heart and realized I had the ability to knockdown obstacles and what better way to live then to help others overcome stress, one of the most deconstructive obstacles I’ve ever encountered.
Massage Therapy changed my life and my way of thinking. Massage can take away pain, lift you up or release you. In today’s fast paced world we forget to take time for ourselves and recover the mind, body and spirit. This is why I massage. Giving others a safe space to renew is my calling. I may not take away all the stress or mend all the scars but I can give you my time, my healing love and a great massage. The rest is up to you.
What do you specialize in?
I listen. It may sound cheesy but, that is what sets me apart from other therapists. I listen to your body on any given day and massage you the way you need in that moment. Listening to the body isn’t something that can be taught, it is intuition without and agenda. After our intake I may have an idea of how the session is going to proceed, but it is when I lay my hands on your body that I know exactly what to do. I have an arsenal of therapies to choose from and I am not afraid to use them. So I might integrate Myofascial Release with an on the table stretching series or Thai with Swedish ending with Ayurvedic pressure points. The ability to integrate based on what I am being told in the moment is my specialty.
Now what therapy do I love the most… That is a different question. I believe when you are truly passionate about something it shows and comes out as specialized knowledge. In which case I love Neuromuscular Therapy. I am currently undergoing an apprenticeship in St. John Method of NMT and continue to research the technique so I can someday master the skill. The reason I love it so much is that science and function come together with lasting results. Through NMT chronic conditions can be corrected allowing the body to recover to its normal state. How cool is that! Anytime I can re-educate a nerve to communicate with a muscle ultimately effecting range of motion and overall function I am overjoyed. It’s a personal victory for me and my clients benefit from my nerdy passion. So if you want to learn all about it ask me and I can bore you with the science behind the treatment ultimately teaching you more about your body which would make me even happier!
On that same principle of passion equals knowledge, I think I should let you know my favorite body part is the Neck. I sprained my neck trying to keep my toddler from falling down the stairs and inevitably, I then slipped and fell down the stairs… My empathy for neck pain is great!!! I have made it my personal mission to conquer neck pain. I love to use NMT techniques and feel the neck release in my hands. Every twitch and softening is such a reward for me and my client, and one step closer to less pain in the neck!
What are your passions and hobbies?
I love spending time with my husband and 3 children. Watching life’s ebb and flow as we all grow together and apart and back again is amazing. They are my passion and my hobby all in one.
I enjoy music. Although I could never play an instrument, I appreciate the poetry music gives my life. Singing at the top of my lungs or dancing in the kitchen make me free. My music playlists are so eclectic and I am always seeking out new music to enjoy!
I love learning about, reading and absorbing all things massage or natural healing related. I often feel like there is never enough time to learn everything about my career and I need another life to dedicate to learn even more. I am amazed daily by the human body and its ability to heal, protect and empower itself.
I yearn to travel. Starting at 13 I set off to Czechoslovakia and lived there for a summer. Exploration is apart of my DNA. I have a bucket list pages long of where I want to go. But of course before I go I have to research and learn everything I can about a place so when I am there I can absorb all of its wonders! Most recently I traveled to Disneyland so if you are wanting to know everything about the history, best deals and secrets I’m your girl!
What are the top three things you do to maintain your health?
Like most people today I struggle to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I find it difficult to balance between career, self-care, family and all the other tasks at hand. But my foundation of health is;
Exercise in many different ways so I don’t get bored.
Listen to my body’s cues, it always tells me what I need.
Seek out Alternative Therapies to recover from ailments as they occur.
