AXILLARY CORDING SYNDROME THERAPY
Our Lymphedema Therapists are trained to treat this painful and debilitating Syndrome. Axillary Web Syndrome (AWS) or cording can develop after a lymph node biopsy, lymph node dissection or breast surgery. The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed that surgery injures the lymphatic and venous vessels and they scar and harden, turning into cords. AWS often presents as a cord of tissue that runs from the armpit toward the elbow and sometimes to the wrist and hand and through the chest wall and abdomen and groin. These cords can cause pain and/or restriction upon movement and it requires specialized training in order for someone to treat this successfully with minimal pain and discomfort. Normal massage techniques will not work with this syndrome, and may cause unnecessary pain and discomfort to the client.
As a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, I am here to guide you through the treatment and recovery process of this condition in simple terms. Lymphedema is chronic swelling that occurs due to a compromised lymphatic system, and I'll explain the steps involved in active treatment and recovery stages.
Active Stage Treatment:
Comprehensive Assessment:
In the active stage, a thorough evaluation of the affected limb is conducted to determine the severity of lymphedema. This helps create a personalized treatment plan.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD):
MLD is a specialized massage technique performed by a certified therapist to stimulate lymph flow and reduce swelling.
Compression Garments:
Wearing compression garments, such as sleeves or stockings, helps to maintain the reduction achieved through MLD and prevents fluid buildup.
Multi-layer Bandaging:
Bandaging with special compression wraps provides consistent pressure to decrease swelling and support the affected area.
Exercise and Movement:
Gentle exercises promote lymphatic flow and support the overall function of the lymphatic system.
Recovery Stage Treatment (Maintenance):
Regular Checkups:
During the recovery stage, consistent follow-up visits with a lymphedema specialist are vital to monitor progress and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.
Compression Garments:
Continuing to wear compression garments is essential in the recovery stage to manage swelling and maintain the results achieved during active treatment.
Self-Care Techniques:
Patients are taught self-MLD and bandaging techniques to manage mild swelling and prevent exacerbation.
Frequency of Treatment:
The frequency of MLD sessions decreases during the recovery stage, and it is tailored based on individual needs and progress.
Benefits of Visiting a Massage Therapist:
Regular visits to a certified lymphedema massage therapist offers several benefits:
Reduced Swelling:
Specialized MLD helps to reduce swelling and discomfort, improving overall quality of life.
Enhanced Lymphatic Flow:
MLD using The Fodder Technoque stimulates the lymphatic system, promoting better fluid drainage and reducing the risk of complications.
Personalized Care:
Lymphedema therapists tailor treatment plans to individual needs, ensuring effective management.
Preventative Measures:
Early intervention and regular checkups can prevent the condition from worsening and avoid potential complications.
Understanding the treatment and recovery stages of lymphedema is crucial for effectively managing this condition. From MLD and compression garments to regular visits to a massage therapist, comprehensive care can significantly improve the quality of life for those living with lymphedema. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of lymphedema, seeking the expertise of a lymphedema specialist is the first step toward a healthier and more comfortable life.
