I am excited to partner with you on your journey to feeling better in and more connected to your body. People seek out Myofascial Release (MFR) for relief from pain, improved movement quality, increased range of motion or, more simply, increasing their ability and capacity to do the things they enjoy doing.
About Myofascial Release
The John F. Barnes Myofascial Release (MFR) Approach® is a manual therapy modality that looks at the body through the lens of connective tissue called fascia. Fascia extends throughout the body from head to toe in a continuous and uninterrupted three dimensional web. Fascia surrounds and infuses every structure of the body down to the cellular level. If you've ever heard the saying "it's all connected" when referring to the human body, fascia is the mechanism for full body connection.
Trauma, poor postural behaviors or inflammation can create restrictions in the fascial web. The restrictions in the fascial web can cause immense pressure on adjacent structures such as nerves, muscles, blood vessels, bone and organs. This pressure on sensitive structures can manifest in the body as pain, restricted motion, restricted function or a host of other symptoms. MFR features gentle yet firm application of sustained pressure into fascial restrictions. As the fascial restrictions are released, the body is better able to engage and apply all of it's amazing self-healing abilities.
Therapists trained in the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach are taught to honor that every client is a unique being with entirely unique and complex fascial patterns in their bodies. As a result, expressions of symptoms that seem common (e.g. back pain) could be caused by unique fascial restrictions from person to person.

What to expect during a session
At the start of the session, you and I will briefly discuss and align on your objectives and priorities for treatment. I will also perform a visual postural assessment. If it is your first session, time will also be spent discussing medical conditions from the medical history portion of the intake form. Upon booking your session online, you will receive an email link to fill out the Intake form online. This should be done before arriving for the session. This initial part of the session is just as valuable to the success of the session as the time spent "hands on".
MFR is typically performed with the client clothed and, therefore, draping with sheets is usually not necessary. Blankets will be available if you get cold during the session. Recommended clothing for a MFR session is:
- Bottoms:
- Best choice: loose fitting shorts with elastic waist
- Bad choice: any tight fitting, non-stretchy shorts or pants (including yoga pants or tights)
- Tops:
- Men: stretchy or loose fitting tank top (or, no shirt is OK for men)
- Women:
- Best choice: stretchy tank top and bra that clasps in back (in case full access to the back is needed)
- Bad choice: heavy/thick sports bra with wide and/or multiple straps
For the majority of the session I will be applying hands-on MFR techniques as you lay on a massage table. You may be laying face-up, face-down or side-lying on the massage table. In some instances you could be seated in a chair, standing or even sitting or lying on the floor.
MFR therapy is not just something that is "done to you"; it is a therapy in which we partner for your well-being. You are invited and encouraged, therefore, to remain awake during the session and to maintain a connected awareness with feelings and sensations in your body. I will invite you to communicate feelings and sensations as they occur. Should you choose to communicate these, this information can provide valuable input to guide the remainder of the session (or indicate focus areas for subsequent sessions).
There may or may not be white noise or "ambient" music playing to break the silence and cover any noises from outside the treatment room.
No oils or creams are used for lubrication in MFR. MFR techniques rely on skin-to-skin connection between the therapist's hands and client's skin to effectively engage fascial barriers. Anything that could reduce skin-to-skin connection and cause sliding will reduce effectiveness of the treatment. It is imperative that you do not apply any lotions, creams or oils to your skin on the day of your session until after your MFR treatment session.
At the end of the session, suggestions for exercises and/or stretches may be offered for you to use for self-treatment between sessions. In some cases there may be self treatment tools suggested as well (usually available from Amazon or other retailers).

15 minute phone consultations can be booked at no cost. This gives you the opportunity to gather more information to assess if Grady and/or Myofascial Release is a good fit for your needs.
Late arrival/Cancellation/No Show Policies
- Pre-payment in full may be required to book a session.
- Clients arriving late for their scheduled session can still be seen but the session will still end at the scheduled time and the cost of the session will not be pro-rated.
- Clients wishing to cancel their session may do so with at least 24 hours notice (notice must be received 24 hours prior to the start time of the scheduled session). If canceled with at least 24 hours notice, then any prepaid funds can be applied in full to a subsequent session. If the client prefers a refund, a small fee will be assessed against the prepaid funds prior to refund to cover the cost of credit card processing fees.
- Clients that cancel late, with less than 24 hours before the scheduled start of the booked session, or do not show up at all for their appointment ("no show") forfeit the scheduled session time and all prepaid funds. The session is not eligible to be rescheduled. Prepaid funds will not be refunded nor applied to a subsequent session.
It is my goal to establish a mutually respectful, trusting and supportive relationship with you as we partner together to meet your objectives. Given that, it is acknowledged that unexpected events and emergencies beyond your control can prevent you from keeping your scheduled session. Any exceptions to this policy that are requested in a timely manner and in good faith will be reviewed and considered on a case-by-case basis.
