The Advantage of Having a Nurse as Your Massage Therapist
Nurses are normally expected to help track and maintain their patient's overall health, not necessarily their physical health. However, an age-old treatment which is gaining new respect in the healthcare field is massage. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies have determined massage reduces pain, stress, and muscle tension, and may help many other disorders, including digestive disorders, fibromyalgia, and anxiety. Combining massage therapy with nursing is increasingly common. Brenda Brown is one example of a nurse who became a massage therapist.
As a Registered Nurse and Licensed Massage Therapist, Brenda has comprehensive education and experience that combines traditional medical knowledge with advanced medical and therapeutic bodywork modalities. This unique combination enables her to work with people facing a wide variety of specific medical and physical challenges. The individual, direct care aspect of massage therapy maintains the connection of health and healing that Brenda enjoyed in the nursing profession.
Brenda is certified in Therapeutic Medical Massage, Pregnancy Massage and Fertility Massage by Claire Miller of Nurturing the Mother. She did her LaStone training with the founder of hot rock treatment, Mary Nelson. She was certified as a Massage Doula by Judith Koch, and was trained in Craniosacral Therapy by Athena Jezik Of Upledger Institute. Brenda also worked as a Mother/Infant Nurse at Ohio Health for 8 years. This experience added greatly to her understanding and practice of fertility massage and utilizing its benefits for mom and baby.
Brenda also serves patients coping with a wide variety of Pain Management needs, including general injuries, sports injuries, acute and chronic pain, musculoskeletal and postural dysfunctions, lower back pain, sciatica, lower leg and ankle pain, migraines, carpal tunnel, rotator cuff, head, neck, and shoulder pain, etc. Brenda is passionate about treating Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) through the use of passive and active massage therapy. In addition to helping individuals cope with pain and injuries, Brenda also offers spa massages to relax the mind and body.
Brenda has taken four basic and two advanced certified courses through Dawn Lewis for Spontaneous Muscle Release Technique (SMRT). This technique is a series of passive contractions that allow the therapist to release muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissue quickly, easily, and with little pain to the client. SMRT is a positional release modality that interrupts pain signals in the body and painlessly resolves trigger points SMRT has an incredibly calming effect on the nervous system and is highly stimulating to the lymphatic system.
Drawing from her 28 years of experience in adult and adolescent psychiatry, Brenda offers general relaxation for anxiety, addiction, and those suffering PTSD from abuse or trauma. She is hopeful to soon offer treatment to veterans as well.
Brenda says, “I have enjoyed 28 years of endless training, practice and care of my clients by offering results as a nurse. If you've tried everything else and it's not working - I've prepared my table for you!"
