My purpose is are all about:
Going Beyond the Massage Table in support of Your Wellness
Ever since I began seeing clients in January 1982, my focus has been treating the whole person, not just muscle aches and pains. I have always looked beyond the massage table, even when clients were on my table. Although I initially focussed on Swedish Massage and relaxation, stress relief techniques. It quickly became apparent that many clients needed = wanted more than just to feel good for an hour. In an era of in creasing High Tech, Ioffered a High Touch service to balance the stresses of this modern world.
As an educator (Special Education) I specialized in unlocking patterns of learning and addressing strategies that could unlock the learning process for my kids. Using my strong pattern recognition ability, knowledge of learning styles, and outcome based backward planning techniques, I was able to find strengths as well as work arounds for my students learning issues.
This has lead me to believe an important part of any healthcare professionals tools must be client = patient education. I offer my client information about conditions - hopefully in more depth than one doctors - as well as strategies that are meant to be remedial (a remedy) as well as preventive.
Many clients come to me with specific issues, like back pain, or tight neck and shoulders from sitting in front of a computer monitor or laptop for many hours. Some come with the primary complaint of “stress.” often vaguely defined. Some come to me because they have a chronic condition which traditional Western medicine as done little for or have been told “learn to live with it.”
Besides using a thorough Intake Form, my first step is to interview new (and continuing clients) before putting them on the table. Often I can tease out the causes of the presented problem by using probing questions that allow the client to tell more. This aids in designing the session, and going beyond the manual manipulation of soft tissue.
With a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and the ability to visualized the structures I am working, I adjust the specific techniques I use as I work based on what my hands tell me and the client’s feedback. You will never get a “One Size Fits All” massage from me.
I see my work as based on three principles:
- Scientific
- Holistic
- Intuitional
Science based - I do not use approaches that have no scientific or medical proof -
I try to stay current on research in anatomy and physiology, the effectiveness of specific techniques on the body in general, disease process, lifestyle and health consequences of lifestyle choices in particular. I work to apply scientific method to understand a each client’s presenting condition, issue or problem. Resources I use include Massage Therapy Journal, and the Science of Massage Institute (SOMI) Journal and the findings of the Touch Research Institute, and (AMTA) Massage Therapy Foundation. As a result, I do not use such unproven techniques as aromatherapy, Hot Stone Massage and ideas such Ear Candling.
Holistic: I treat the entire person, not just the soft tissue and take into account such things as lifestyle, diet and nutrition, work environment, even the spiritual dimension and past treatment to build a treatment plan. I recognize the body’s ability to self-heal, and attempt to align my work that ability. I also see each person as a physical body and a human energy field, which can be affected by some Eastern - Asian techniques such as Shiatsu (or Acupressure). To support this Holistic aspect,I often ask about Stress Management, Diet and Nutrition issues and needs. I offer suggestions ranging from reminders to warm up and cool down before/after a workout, to exploring what stresses a person deals with and may suggest strategies to manage stress. I also offer ways to look at diet and nutrition needs and offer ways to control costs for supplements that can enhance physical Wellness.
Intuitive: Some of what I do is not found in any Massage classroom or text book; it simply come to me in the process. I choose to believe that I am meant to do this work and am often guided by something beyond me which may be understood as Life Force, a Higher Power or God. In any event, I am the vehicle of healing not the healer.
Newest Offerings:
Most recently, I have just begun inviting persons looking for a different way of life to build a health and wellness business online, affiliated With Shaklee. Twill be teaching these folks about building a business that strengthen s their wellness and that of others.
Finally, I see my work as giving back to others to support and enhance my clients’ lives and Journey to Wellness.
