Massage Modalities
Massage is defined as the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments) done with the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the nervous, muscular, respiratory, skeletal, lymphatic, and circulatory structures, done in a scientific manner for therapeutic results. There are several styles of massage that are better for different treatment goals. I don't like to "label" massages, but listed below are some basic descriptions of some commonly used modalities. At your appointment, tell me what your concerns and goals are for the treatment, and I will tailor the massage to fit your needs. I do not give a "cookie-cutter" massage. Each massage is unique and personalized every time to suit you and your body's needs. I often combine the use of several different modalities in order to meet your exact goals. Your body is constantly changing and adapting, and my massage technique will evolve with you to meet your treatment goals.
Swedish Massage
The primary goal of Swedish massage is relaxation. The pampering massage typically performed at a spa is usually a Swedish massage. Swedish massage is more of a general full body treatment; when problem areas are discovered, more specific work can be applied. Some benefits of Swedish massage include relieving muscle tension, improving circulation, reducing stress and anxiety, releasing adhesions, and removing metabolic waste from the muscle tissue.
Medical Massage
Medical massage is applied to specific areas of the body on the basis of the pathology of the patient's chief complaint. In other words, medical massage is not a general massage treatment and would focus on a particular area, rather than a full body treatment. Medical massage is prescribed by a doctor to treat a diagnosed condition.
Deep Tissue Massage
This type of massage focuses on the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and connective tissue. While using some of the basic techniques and principles of Swedish massage, the pressure is generally more intense. Deep tissue massage focuses on relieving chronic muscle tension, or what is commonly known as "knots". It is a more specific treatment than Swedish massage. While the pressure is more intense, it should never hurt, often described as a "pleasure pain". If the pressure ever becomes unbearable or painful, you should let your massage therapist know and they will ease up on the pressure. After receiving a deep tissue massage some clients experience soreness that is similar to the soreness experienced after exercising. This is normal and will go away after one or two days.
Ashiatsu DeepFeet Bar Therapy Massage
In the Japenese language “Ashi” translates to foot and “Atsu” into pressure. Ashiatsu DeepFeet Bar Therapy, is a barefoot massage technique in which the therapist delivers deep, broad, consistent pressure while utilizing their feet and body weight. Parallel bars are used above the massage table by the therapist for balance, support and client safety. There are numerous benefits for choosing Ashiatsu Bar Therapy. The main benefit is more pressure with less discomfort during and after your treatment. Clients have also reported an increase in range of motion, reduction in muscle tension and pain, along with a sense of overall well-being. This is my personal favorite type of massage to give and receive.
Ashi-Thai
Ashi-Thai is primarily compressions and assisted stretching. You can just relax as the therapist moves you into various stretches. Ashi-Thai helps with your flexibility and range of motion. Traditionally Thai massage is performed on a mat on the floor. Ashi bars allow for the service to be performed on a table. You are clothed during Ashi-Thai so please wear yoga/workout attire (leggings or sweatpants and long sleeved shirt is preferred but you can wear a t-shirt) that you can move in.
Sports Massage
While sports massage is primarily geared toward athletes, it can be helpful for anyone. Sports massage is particularly useful for anyone with chronic pain, injury, or range of motion issues. Sports massage provides increased bio-mechanical efficiency and decreases the chance of injury. The primary goal of sports massage is to assist the athlete in achieving optimal performance and recovery. Sports massage usually focuses on particular problem areas for the client. The most common type of sports massage is a "maintenance sports massage" that is given during training, or any time not near an event. Sports massage reduces recovery time by alleviating pain, decreasing muscle fatigue, and restoring the body to health. Pre-event sports massage can be used to enhance pre-event preparation between 30 minutes and 6 hours before the event. Post-event sports massage is used between 30 minutes and 6 hours after an event in order to normalize the body's tissues.
Bamboo Fusion Massage
Varying sizes and shapes of warmed bamboo sticks are used as an extension of the therapist's hands in order to provide broad pressure. Using bamboo to knead, roll, and iron the muscles results in unique sensations unable to be replicated by hands. Bamboo massage can be applied as a relaxing or deep tissue treatment.
Hot Stone Massage
Smooth stones are heated and then lubricated with oil, the therapeutic effects of heat are used to relax muscles more deeply. Used as an extension of the therapist’s hands, the use of massage stones induces deep relaxation and provides a unique experience many find to be tremendously calming and centering. While generally a more relaxing method, stones can also be used to apply a more specific, deeper pressure to adhesions or trigger points.
Sticks and Stones Massage
The ultimate melt-into-the-table relaxation experience. A combination of bamboo fusion and hot stone massage giving you the best of both modalities. Experience the unique sensations of bamboo sticks and hot stones used as an extension of the therapist's hands while the therapeutic effects of heat are used to relax the muscles more deeply.
Pregnancy Massage
Tailored to the expectant mother's needs, pregnancy massage is generally given in the side-lying position. Some benefits of pregnancy massage include reducing stress and anxiety, decrease swelling in the arms and legs, and relieving aches and pains in muscles and joints. Pregnancy massage may not be recommended for women with certain health conditions or a high risk pregnancy. It is best to consult with your doctor before receiving a pregnancy massage.
Cupping Massage
The use of a cupping machine allows for a unique sensation as the muscle is lifted from the body. The machine allows for precise pressure and the ability to continuously draw in and release the muscle. Stationary and moving cupping is used in order to get the most effective results for your treatment. Cupping may result in petechiae marks in treated areas.
Reflexology
Reflexology is the manipulation of the soft tissue of the feet and/or hands. It is based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands and feet that relate to every organ, gland, and system of the body.
Chair Massage *
David Palmer invented chair massage in order to make massage therapy convenient and affordable for anyone, anywhere, anytime. Some companies provide corporate chair massage for their employees "on-site" at the workplace. Chair massage is used for a variety of events ranging from fundraisers, personal parties, marathons, and many others. The length of a chair massage varies, but is commonly 10 or 15 minutes long. Chair massage includes work on the back, neck, arms, and hands. Benefits of chair massage include reducing muscle tension, freeing adhesions, increasing local blood flow, loosening stiffness in joints, and relieving pain, just like a table massage. Chair massage is stimulating, leaving the client feeling refreshed and re-energized. Benefits to having chair massage in the workplace include increasing productivity, significantly improving employee problem solving abilities, improving creative thinking, relieving fatigue, helping to eliminate absenteeism, decreasing stress and repetitive injuries, increasing job satisfaction and creating a caring environment that employees appreciate.

Directions
I am in a small plaza located between the Foot Performance Center and Tuke Agency. You can see the sign for the Foot Performance Center so look for that to turn in the parking lot. I'm in between the two businesses, but my entrance is closer to the Tuke Agency. If you are coming from Winton I am on the left side just past the McDonalds before you get to ESL. If you are coming towards Winton I am on the right hand side before you hit the light/McDonalds. The sign on my door says Jenifer Krist, LMT.
