What is Bowenwork?
Bowenwork is a gentle manual therapy that uses subtle moves over muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves. These moves alert the autonomic nervous system to shift from "fight or flight" mode to "rest, relax and repair" mode, letting the body know 'the emergency is over'. At times our innate healing mechanism stalls or plateaus due to various stressors. Bowen Therapy reactivates this mechanism so the body can then continue to heal itself. The body may continue to integrate the changes 5 to 10 days after a session. During this time other forms of manipulative therapy are discouraged so as not to dilute or interfere with the efficacy of the work.
Who can benefit from Bowen Therapy?
The Bowen Technique is appropriate for anyone from infants to the elderly or athletes to the infirm. For many conditions, people see improvement in 3-5 sessions one week apart and for those with more chronic issues, additional sessions may be necessary.
What can I expect?
- After a thorough health intake and assessment, you will lie down on a comfortable treatment table (or sit in a chair if unable to lie down).
- It is best to wear light-weight, stretchy clothing. If you prefer to undress, you will be under a sheet for modesty and comfort.
- A series of gentle rolling moves over specific soft tissues will be done, I will then leave the area for a minimum of 2 minutes to allow your body to begin its work. After the body has had time to process the information the next set of moves will be done. This will continue until the session ends.
- A session lasts from 20-45 minutes. [Please allow 60 minutes for the first visit]
- When the session is over, I will go over some considerations for the week following your session and may assign simple exercises that will help the body to respond better to the Bowenwork.

What is the Emmett Technique?
The Emmett Technique is a unique body therapy created by Ross Emmett. It is a recognized technique used to ease pain and discomfort, increase movement and improve quality of life.
How does it work?
The Emmett Technique is an understanding of the body's response to light touch. It has been suggested that the body reacts in a similar way to the workings of a touch-screen. Small sensors allow access to the brain via the therapist's touch. As well as the ability to directly influence muscle action, these points may have a memory and emotional attachment.
What should you expect?
You may be asked some questions about your general health and the reason for your visit. Sessions may be done while you are fully clothed, although some garments may need to be removed or loosened. Session times may vary according to your therapist. While individual experiences may vary, relief is often instantaneous.
Can you use other therapies?
Yes. Emmett is a complete therapy but has the ability to work in combination to compliment other modalities. The technique often allows other therapies to work more efficiently. Client comfort and accurate assessments are important elements of this therapy.

Scar Release Technique
Joy also offers a remarkable scar release technique that improves scar sites caused by planned or unplanned surgeries and injuries. In only 1-3 visits, old or new scars will soften, sensation can be restored, and restrictions released. This may be included in your bodywork session or done as a stand alone appointment.
