{"id":35751,"date":"2016-04-19T13:59:14","date_gmt":"2016-04-19T18:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.massagebook.com\/massage-therapy\/?p=35751"},"modified":"2016-04-19T14:00:10","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T19:00:10","slug":"a-feel-good-solution-for-sleep-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/massagebook.com\/massage-therapy\/a-feel-good-solution-for-sleep-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"A feel good solution for sleep issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is nothing better than a solid night\u2019s sleep to help you manage all the activities and stresses of your day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how many of us get that good night\u2019s sleep as often as we need it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not enough of us, it turns out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the National Sleep Foundation, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sleepfoundation.org\/sites\/default\/files\/STREPchanges_1.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the recommended amount of sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for most adults age 26-64 is seven to nine hours, with six or 10 being appropriate for certain individuals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/166553\/less-recommended-amount-sleep.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bout 40 percent of Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> get less than that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building up a major sleep debt over time will not only hamper our moods and ability to easily cope with busy schedules and stressful lives, but it can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/sleep-deprivation\/effects-on-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severely impair our health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep disorders and chronic sleep loss put us at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/excessive-sleepiness-10\/10-results-sleep-loss?page=2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for heart disease, heart attack, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes. And up to 90 percent of people suffering from insomnia also report another major health condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lack of sleep is often the culprit behind accidents, forgetfulness, lack of sex drive and aging skin as well (it&#8217;s true!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But perhaps the most important reason to get a good night\u2019s sleep is that we just feel better and can be our best selves when we\u2019re rested. And it\u2019s not just about getting the right amount of hours but also about getting quality sleep too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this quality sleep is how massage therapy can be an added boost to your healthy sleep routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While regular massage is a great stress-relief itself, massage has also been shown to be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepreviewmag.com\/2014\/05\/massage-therapy-sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major sleep enhancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing the body and brain to relax enough to get the kind of quality sleep needed to rejuvenate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia is associated with a lack of seratonin, which serves as a precursor to the body\u2019s creation of melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone released by the brain to quiet and reset the part that directs the circadian cycles to prepare the body to sleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study on back pain by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www6.miami.edu\/touch-research\/AdultMassage.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Touch Research Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that in addition to a decrease in long-term pain, those who received massage also had an increase in serotonin levels, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.integrativehealthcare.org\/mt\/archives\/2005\/08\/insomnia_seroto.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resulting in improved sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Massage really helps you get the rest you need to function well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This coincides with a \u00a0relatively recent discovering that while the body is taking a break during sleep, it is one of the most important <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3326565\/the-power-of-sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">times for the brain to begin working<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we are asleep, thousands of neurons jump into action, and pulse with electrical signals to provide the brain a hypnotic-like experience. At the same time, the brain sorts through all the information it gained during the day at a pace it could not handle in real time.
