Massage&#8230;then Sleep!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Sleep is a pretty mysterious concept (though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massagebook.com\/\">we<\/a> highly recommend more of it ourselves)!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Although there are many theories, <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2013\/12\/how-sleep-deprivation-decays-the-mind-and-body\/282395\/\">researchers<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> don\u2019t know why we need to sleep to stay healthy and alive. But it\u2019s no mystery that sleep deprivation can be harmful to both the body and the mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">And it\u2019s also no secret we are a sleep-deprived society, placing more importance on work and not enough on rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>People need seven to eight hours of sleep for optimal function. Each person is different and everybody has a different need for sleep. The lucky ones can feel rested after five hours of sleep while others need 10 for the same restful feeling.<\/p>\n<p>But just telling people to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/how-to-sleep-better#.\">sleep more<\/a> isn\u2019t the answer. Most of us know we should go to bed earlier, drink fewer espressos and work out more to help improve sleep, but it isn\u2019t always easy to fit those in our busy schedules.<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s why it is not just important, but crucial. While we are sleeping, our body is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2013\/12\/how-sleep-deprivation-decays-the-mind-and-body\/282395\/\">repairing<\/a> our cells. When we are not sleeping, our brain cells are deprived of this cycle, causing decreased function.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line \u2013 without sleep no amount of caffeine can make us think better, remember more or basically function at our highest level.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Ever notice that after losing a few hours of sleep or staying up all night, you have trouble concentrating and tend to feel slower? Sleep deprivation can cause slower reaction times, making it harder for us to <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/stanford-center-for-sleep-sciences-and-medicine\/sleep-deprivation_b_3536674.html\">concentrate<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> and keep attention. This is also why our memories can be compromised when we are tired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">And the long-term effects are even worse. Consistently losing those precious hours of sleep can lead to <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2013\/12\/how-sleep-deprivation-decays-the-mind-and-body\/282395\/\">depression<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">, high blood pressure, heart disease, weight gain, and in serious cases, may lead to death.
