What is Shiatsu Massage?
Shiatsu massage originated in Japan and is based on traditional Japanese and Chinese medicine. The theory behind this technique is that our bodies are made up of energy, and when this energy becomes blocked, various ailments result. Shiatsu was developed as a way to remove any blockages and align the body and mind.
The term shiatsu means “finger pressure,” which perfectly describes this technique. During a shiatsu massage, your therapist applies force to pressure points on your body using his or her thumbs, elbows, knees, or feet. Additionally, shiatsu focuses on rotating and stretching the limbs and joints.
Because a Shiatsu massage is focused on pressure points, it is possible to be fully clothed when receiving one. In fact, if you’re receiving a chair massage, it’s very likely that your massage therapist is using a Shiatsu massage technique.
