Professional athletes around the world competing at the highest levels love sports massage for recuperation, but could it be something you’d benefit from as well?
What is sports massage?
Sports massage therapy is a form of deep tissue massage that often also incorporates myofascial techniques to assist in correcting imbalances and problems in the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues.
What are its benefits?
In addition to the benefits of most massage—including lowered blood pressure, increased circulation, relaxation and reduced anxiety—sports massage improves range of motion, soft tissue function, flexibility and can aid in recuperation. Sports massage therapists do this with an increased ability to target muscle-tendon junctions.
How often is recommended?
If you are an athlete or someone with an intense workout regimen, it is recommended around once a week between workouts. If you’re new to your workout regimen or to sports massage, talk to your therapist about the optimal schedule.
Is it just for professional athletes?
Heck no! Sports do not have to be your career to enjoy the full benefits of sports massage. If you do any workouts with regularity (running, biking, power yoga, etc.) that create soreness and muscle fatigue, you can benefit from sports massage.
Anything I should do before my appointment?
We recommend staying hydrated before an appointment because dehydration can lead to stiff muscles and a more painful massage.
And don’t forget your homework!
Sports massage is more interactive than other types of massage. You’ll likely move around so the therapist can use various techniques to separate muscle fibers and release tension. Be sure to ask your therapist how you can maintain the work that has been done if he or she doesn’t instruct you on what to do.
