Hello! My name is Jeanie Matthews. Moving to Knoxville in 2016 and after seeing the Urban Wilderness' deep beauty, I was inspired to create a namesake for this natural healer, Urban Wellness. When our bodies are under stress we need to breathe, practice mindfulness, and receive massage to release imbalances or adhesions in the muscle or fascia.
I became a zealot of therapeutic massage in 2004 after visiting the Bath House in Hot Springs, AR. It was there I received a Swedish massage, I left feeling so good inside and out, I knew in that moment I had to be a part of the healing arts world. I went back home to Charlottesville, VA and attended massage night school. I graduated from Virginia School of Massage with a Professional Massage degree focused on a customized system of Swedish, Myo-fascial, and Deep Tissue, to release adhesions and create an overall sense of well being. My continued education training includes: Thai Yoga Massage; Thai Massage for the Table; Oncology and Infusion Center Massage; Healing Stones certification; Reiki One Practitioner; and Pre-natal Massage.
In 2013, I found myself working for Zen Studios, Spartanburg, SC serving as a massage therapist. I fell in love with yoga's enlightenment path through asanas (poses) our body's way of detoxifying itself. I completed the studio's 200-hour Vinyasa and Yapana restorative yoga teacher training. As a registered Yoga Alliance teacher, I specialize in Individual Yoga Sessions - teaching students the basics of alignment, breath and flow. As a yoga teacher for personal and social change, I substitute-teach for yoga classes with the YMCAs of East Tennessee. Through my church and prayer life, I volunteer-teach a weekly yoga class, for the Immaculate Conception Women's Group.
Staying fit is a major priority in my life, which includes healthy eating, so I was pleased to become a 40 Days to Enlightened Eating (book by Elise Cantrell) teacher in 2015. 40 Days to Enlightened Eating is an Ayurvedic (sister science of yoga) Dosha (our bodies constitutional make-up) based way of eating for natural healing inside and out. I hold a group yoga/book club/40 day class twice a year (Lent and Advent) to re-examine eating habits and share knowledge with each other.
So weather you're a hiker, biker, or bird watcher... call me at Urban Wellness to assist you with your wellness needs. JBM
