Training with Malama Na Pua

I was fortunate to have been able to train under some of Hawaii's most treasured, modern practitioners. I started learning Lomilomi at home at the age of 12 while working on my father. My path always lead me into massage therapy. 6-8 years later, a student in an internship phase of licensure, I met and was lucky to train under Bula Logan and Aunty Alapa'i Kahuena. From Bula, I learned how to set the body, to recognize symmetry and balance. From Aunty Alapa'i, I learned many of our Hawaiian La'au Lapa'au, Hawaiian herbal medicines and together we learned Lomilomi. Working with and learning from the Malama Na Pua team lead to wonderful adventures and experience. We provided services for our community at the Queen Lili'u'okalani Childrens Center in Punalu'u, Oahu. We had a satellite office in Kalihi and had partnerships with a company called Athena Holistic to provide service to our visitors from Japan. I was fortunate enough to be able to travel to Japan on two occasions to share Lomilomi with the people of Japan. I continue to practice the art of Elua Ho'olomilomi today and it will stay with me for life.

Working in a Spa

In 2005, I got hired at Mandara Spa at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. It was a great experience in the pampering and luxury side of this industry. I learned many protocols for spa treatments such as body wraps, body scrubs, vichy shower treatments, products and general catering to ones needs. It was enriching and fun. I finished my time there in 2013.

Back to the Locals

After 8 years in the spa industry, in the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, I was hired at a local establishment catering to the local community. ILomi Massage Therapy in Kaneohe was a charming little studio where I was able to connect again with local clientele. You are not likely to find local clientele patronizing a spa in Waikiki due to cost, travel etc... It was a chance for me to reconnect with some of our local practitioners as well. I was there 2 years before moving on to Windward Family Wellness Center, now known as Windward Spine & Body Center.

Windward Spine & Body Center

I began working with Dr. Guthrie, DC at Windward Family Wellness Center, now known as Windward Spine & Body Center in Temple Valley, Oahu in March of 2015. Working here has been a very enriching experience in that I am able to work with clients on a medical/health level that you don't see in a spa or an average massage establishment. The medical side of the massage industry is growing as more and more health care professionals, doctors and insurance companies accept massage therapy as a way to improve health and wellness and as people demand alternatives to previous treatments including drugs. This has been a great way for us to document the benefits and results of successful treatments and further our profession. Our ultimate goal in the future of Windward Spine & Body Center is to start a State Approved Licensure program for Massage Therapy. Other services that we provide are Chiropractic care, Yoga classes and instructor training, and Chinese Healing Arts such as Acupuncture and Herbs.
